Town of Nederland Comprehensive Plan Update

A meaningful and effective comprehensive plan is a true reflection of the community’s voice, and this project approach has been powerful in achieving that in Nederland.

Situated in a high-elevation mountain valley 17 miles west of Boulder, Colorado, the Town of Nederland is charming community faced with a unique set of planning challenges, as it continues to experience growth in both population and as a destination.

Most people in Nederland believe strongly in environmental sustainability, yet there is divergence in perspectives on how the town should manage or direct growth in the future. In order to harness these vocal and well-informed perspectives, SE Group engaged community members to lead various group discussions around certain elements of the Comprehensive Plan. These leaders were termed “Plan Ambassadors” and served as liaisons to the greater Nederland community to ensure that the plan update addressed the full spectrum of ideas and goals they have for the future.

Project Highlights

Sustainability in Planning

  • The updated plan has a very strong sustainability focus throughout. Policy statements are linked to “why this matters” explanations that convey the think globally, act locally philosophy.
  • The Plan received an Honor Award for Sustainability and Environmental Planning in 2014 by the Colorado Chapter of the American Planning Association.

It is a plan that demonstrates leadership in how to incorporate sustainability throughout a planning document, not only by demonstrating how particular policies relate to sustainability, but also by incorporating ideas from the community and respecting the character of the place to help ensure utilization.
