Landscape Architecture

SE Group created a master plan for the new nature center and raptor facility at the Vermont Institute of Natural Science (VINS). This allowed VINS to create an exciting visitor center and demonstration area, provide on-site veterinary services, as well as update their bird facilities.

The 36-acre abandoned gravel quarry presented an ideal opportunity for the creation of a Nature Center—promoting stewardship of the natural environment. The site carefully balanced the need for adequate visitor and tour bus parking, service and emergency access, building program requirements, raptor enclosures and hawk fly demonstration area, connections to existing trails, and future expansion.

Project Highlights

Commitment to Preservation

  • The landscape concept for the site respects the historical and existing topographical layout of the site.
  • New plantings mimic the same plant species and growth patterns currently found on the site and reinforce the natural beauty of the area.
  • Innovative stormwater management, green building systems, and indigenous plant materials were integrated into the site resulting in a project which defines the VINS culture.
