Breckenridge Ski Resort’s proposal to develop Peak 6 included approximately 550 acres of lift-served and hike-to skiing within its Forest Service-administered special use permit area. The Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) that SE Group prepared objectively analyzed complex biological and social resource issues such as Canada lynx habitat, stream health, and traffic/parking.
Public engagement and transparency was critical in this EIS project, and SE Group facilitated public outreach and public meetings throughout. Additionally, SE Group developed an innovative project-specific website to present the NEPA process to the public (www.breckenridgepeak6.com), and provide them with the opportunity to review the document online. Essential to the management of public comments, the project specific website interacted directly with a custom Comment Management System. This allowed key stakeholders, agencies, and the public to efficiently review the Draft EIS, which generated over 900 comments.
A Record of Decision, which approved the Peak 6 project, was issued by the Forest Service in August 2012. The project was completed and opened to the public for the 2013/14 winter season.
All of the SE Group staff are highly professional, especially dealing with controversial issues in a public setting. During public involvement processes, especially public meetings, they are very skilled in engaging the public in discussions and obtaining meaningful and helpful input.
